FORCE OF DARKNESS "s/t"
[CD]

FORCE OF DARKNESS \"s/t\"
Greeted by the obscure imagery which adorns the cover for the Chilean's debut full length one can be convinced that the music therein would be yet another romp into the oppressive and amorphous death metal sound that has been becoming so ubiquitous in recent years. However, unlike the Portals, Antediluvians and Abyssals who are all trying their hand at this 'cavern-core' sound, Force of Darkness are following a different path entirely to the rest of the pack. While the new-old guard of death metal is toying around with sounds which supposedly harken back to the grimy and unwelcoming childhood of the genre, Force of Darkness are gazing ever further back; to a time when death metal was but a foetus within the womb of abrasive, atonal thrash. With a suitcase of bullet belts and shiny white high tops, they have hopped in the DeLorean and not even contemplated stopping until deep into the 1980's. The result is intriguing, with songs which are as enjoyable and upbeat as they are dark and uncompromising. The disc plays like a photo album of death metal's childhood; Possessed, Sepultura, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Bathory, they are all here, and even Tom Araya's piercing Angel of Death scream sees some airtime in some tracks, particularly effectively in the track 'Blood in the Skies'.
