Exactly what it says on the packaging, this 23-song collection traces the Angelic Upstarts as they maneuvered around the major labels (Warners, Zonophone) that carried them through the late '70s and early '80s -- that is, the self-released single that brought them to prominence in the first place, 1978's still-seething "The Murder of Liddle Towers," and then a four year leap to 1982, and their debut release on Anagram, "Woman in Disguise." So, that opening blast notwithstanding, Independent Punk Singles Collection is not classic Upstarts. They have always been able to craft a catchy footstomper when they wanted and, chasing them through to their final 45 before splitting in 1986, "Brighton Bomb," it's easy to see how they retained so many admirers, even as their commercial and critical kudos waned.
