The five-member death metal group known as Abyss released two demos, of which 2012′s The Reins of Horror was especially noteworthy, showing a band less inclined to venture into the new boredom of meta-death metal exposition and more driven to the kind of straightforward death metal. What?s most magnetic about the band?s debut, Heretical Anatomy, is the thankful immediate presence of riffs that don?t stay in lockstep with the percussion blitz. Yes, like any kind of death metal worth its salt, this album chews through every second of its two minutes with absolute menace but not without making damn good use of its dual guitars providing a just as wrathful response digression to the musical chaos around it. Death metal needs to be filthy and unforgiving in its execution, and it?s abundantly clear that the Toronto-based Abyss have that concept at the appropriately gnarled and mutilated heart of their music.
