Aosta, 1981. A young man with a bass guitar in hand walks through the cold toward a basement. He doesn’t even know how to tune the instrument, but it doesn’t matter: what counts is making do with what you have—and doing it now. *Walking on Ice* is first and foremost a collection of stories and reflections, but above all images, compiled by Gianpiero Capra, bassist for the Aosta-based band Kina, one of the iconic groups of 1980s Italian hardcore punk. But it’s not just that: between the lines, and in those photographs, the story emerges of a generation that chose to stubbornly go “in the opposite direction.” Through photographs, found objects, audio cassettes, and records forgotten in boxes, along with memories lived at full volume, the book opens a window in time onto years spent in vans, at underground concerts, with secretly photocopied fanzines, and handwritten letters—from Turin to Hamburg, from Bari to Barcelona, from the Giungla Occupata to Forte Prenestino. And on a network of young anarchist punks who traveled across Europe with very little money and unshakable trust in one another. But after forty years, what remains of that nomadic tribe? And what happens to those who try to live in accordance with what they believe in? The answers come in unexpected moments—in the songs that resonate in the heart, in the smile of those who stood in the front row beneath the stage and are still there today.
