2008 collection from the infamous Norwegian Black Metal legend. For some it's seemingly impossible to mention Burzum without having to detail Varg Vikerness' political and social viewpoints (and his conviction for murdering a member of Mayhem). This collection isn't for that purpose. The primary focus here will be Burzum, the music and not the controversy that surrounds the man. It's eccentric heavy heavy full of sinister cacophony and brimming shrieks perhaps recalling an early time in the thrash or death metal scene. Burzum's crude and raw approach still finds time to slip in serene passages yet nevertheless remains bleak and confrontational much like its controversial front man. The sound on "Anthology" is cold, brutal, & grim, & while these musical qualities certainly aren't anything remotely groundbreaking in the world of black metal, Burzum was one of the bands responsible for cementing Black Metal as a legitimate musical genre."Anthology" is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys extreme metal, noise, dark ambient, martial folk, etc. It's a healthy introduction into one of the biggest names and pioneers of the notorious Black Metal movement.
